New Orleans Street Tiles

New Orleans street tiles are a central feature in the Muses logo.  Using squares cut from a thick foam sheet, I created a simple, yet fanciful embellishment.

1/4” grid paper, or guide image
Plastic gallon freezer bag
6mm White Darice Foamies Sheet

Sapphire ArtMinds extra fine glitter
Bright Blue Scribbles 3D paint
Black Scribbles 3D paint
Mod Podge Gloss
E6000 adhesive
Ruler
Utility knife

The first order of business is to obtain an image to guide the drawing of the letters. The easiest option is to follow this link, resize the image to 3.5 x 1”, and print. If this is not feasible, you could simply draw 1/2” block letters on 1/4” grid paper.

IMG_2339 Place the guide sheet inside the gallon plastic freezer bag. After tracing the letters with the blue 3D paint, sprinkle with the Sapphire glitter. Set aside to dry.

IMG_2488 Using the ruler and utility knife, cut the foam sheet into 3/4” squares. Do not obsess about perfectly square tiles or straight lines. In fact, the M tile should be a little larger than the U tile. Size the tile to the letter. Cover the squares with Mod Podge and sprinkle with Crystal Diamonds glitter. Set aside to dry.

IMG_2484 After everything is completely dry, carefully peel the glittered letters from the plastic freezer bag. Use the E6000 adhesive to adhere the letters to the glittered tiles. To add textural interest to the assembled tiles, freehand small “cracks” with the black 3D paint.  The tiles are ready to be added to any shoe with hot glue or E6000 adhesive.
